A Germany-wide premiere: free simulation games in public libraries for interested citizens. The Association of Public Libraries in Berlin (VÖBB) offers three simple simulation games on the work of the district councils (BVV) in Berlin. The goal is to increase democratic participation in the districts. The simulation games are digitally supported and take place on site with the help of library staff. We developed the content and the digital game template, as well as the training for the facilitators.
Biberfelde is a fictional Berlin district. In three different political simulations, the members of the Biberfelde BVV discuss current issues concerning the shaping of the district. For this purpose, they are divided into fictitious parties. At the end of each debate they have to agree on a decision to shape the district in the interest of their constituents. One of the three simulation games is written in plain language.
Interested parties can register for a simulation in a library via the website planspiel-bezirkspolitik.de. The site, which we designed, also contains an introductory quiz on the work of the BVV in Berlin. The simulation games are then conducted on site by library staff and last 90-120 minutes. They are supported in the moderation by the software, which guides the participants through the game phases. Additional materials are available for interactive evaluation.
The project includes not only the three simulation games, but also a quiz in which several groups compete against each other, and a public quiz in which BVV knowledge can be tested. Everything is accessible via a dedicated homepage.
Thanks to our training courses, the library staff are ready to independently manage the interactive educational offers. The administration of the game series is done in a separate admin area on Senaryon.
The libraries regularly offer appointments for the games. The flat-rate annual license includes the facilitation of as many games as desired per year. The Senaryon team is available in the background for technical support.
